Information for mentors
 

The Postgraduate Peer Mentoring program is a Monash-run program led by student leaders and staff designed to help postgraduate students new to Monash transition to university life.

Postgraduate students are invited to connect with two postgraduate peer mentors and a small group of other postgraduate students from their faculty who are also new to Monash. As mentors, you will use your university experience to guide your mentees and act as their go-to support throughout their transition to postgraduate study at Monash.

How are catch ups conducted?

Participants meet three times throughout the semester-long program where you will share your knowledge and insights into the Monash experience, answer mentees' questions, provide study tips and tricks, share what's on offer at Monash, and let them know about fun events and activities to help them meet other postgraduate students and build their community at Monash. You will also be part of the larger Peer Mentoring Community of mentors.

How and when are groups matched?

Mentors and mentees are matched based on course and overseas status. Matching takes place in early February when mentees start to enrol. Mentoring groups are published on our mentoring platform, Chronus, in mid-Feb and participants will be notified via email.

Mentors are more experienced postgraduate students in their second semester or above who have been where mentees are now. Mentors go through an application process and undertake specific training to equip them for their role as peer mentor. We are seeking mentors who:

• Have the desire to help new students get started and succeed at Monash
• Are willing to share their own university experience
• Display strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Have the ability to work with a variety of people from different backgrounds
• Are able to commit to 20 volunteer hours across the semester

Peer mentors are students who have applied for the role and undergone training to help incoming postgraduate students new to Monash. To be eligible, mentors must:

• Be currently enrolled in a postgraduate course in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University
• Completed at least one semester (24 credit points) of their current postgraduate degree by the time the program commences the following semester
• Submit an application form, complete a video interview, and undergo mentor training
• Have a valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) before commencing in the role

The Postgraduate Peer Mentoring program is specifically tailored to postgraduate students to ease their transition into Monash University and postgraduate study. As peer mentors, the benefit of mentoring is knowing that you can assist new students by helping them get set up for the rest of their studies at uni.
